What to Expect

Initial Evaluation

Your initial evaluation will occur during your first physical therapy session. During this session, your physical therapist will take the time to learn about you, your condition, your previous level of function, and how your condition is currently impacting various aspects of your life. Based on this information, your therapist will decide to take specific measurements that will allow them to determine what may be causing your problem. Information gathered in your evaluation will allow your physical therapist to tailor an appropriate and specific treatment plan for you.

Preparation

In preparing for your first PT appointment, you may want to make note of important factors in your injury. For example, try answering the following questions: When did symptoms begin? What makes it better? Worse? How often do the symptoms occur? Do symptoms vary in the course of a day?

Your therapist may choose to perform what is called a “movement screen.” Consider wearing athletic attire or something loose that will allow for free movement and the ability for your therapist to easily see the impaired area.

Setting Up A Treatment Plan

After your examination, your PT will develop and discuss with you a treatment plan that will focus on your goals, which can include decreasing your pain, improving your mobility, and returning to your functional activities. Your physical therapist will discuss with you the goals of treatment, the expected course of your rehab, and the suggested frequency of appointment scheduling. You can expect to be sent home with a specific list of exercises to be performed outside of your physical therapy sessions (referred to as a “Home Exercise Program”).
